MSWG Painting Competitions Results

So the Desolation of Stockport has past, which means it is time to announce the winners of our Inaugural Painting Competition.

For those who didn't know, last year a very kind (anonymous) donor gifted the club with a large sum of money on the condition we ran a big Lord of the Rings/ Hobbit Strategy Battle Game painting competition.

Kev of Shadow and Flame very graciously agreed to be the sole judge of this and boy did he have a tough task. There were loads of outstanding entries and by his own admission there were many entries worthy of winning. Below are his top 3 models from each category and the winner of the Best Painted Army, which was voted for by the players of DoS 2015.

Best Painted Army - James Baldwin - Warriors of the Forest Realm

3rd Place (Single Mini) - Jeroen Felix - Thorin King Under the Mountain

2nd Place (Single Mini) - James Baldwin - Radagast the Brown

1st Place (Single Mini/ Hero) - Matthew Davis - Bombur, Champion of Erebor with Horn

3rd Place (Monster/ Cavalry) - Andy Brown - Mirkwood Spider
*Judges Quote: ''If I wasn't terrified of spiders this may have won''*

2nd Place (Monster/ Cavalry) - Stephen Crowe - Sauron

1st Place (Monster/ Cavalry) - James Baldwin - Radagast on Eagle

There were also Honourable Mentions for the models below from Kev.

Michael Churchill - Saruman the Wise

Thomas Harrison - Gamling with Banner

Thomas Macklen - Dwalin the Young

Congratulations to all who made the top 3, there was a lot of tough competition. Kev was also asked to pick his overall winner and he chose Matthew Davis' Bombur and I think we can all agree, it was something special.
The attendants of the Desolation of Stockport were also asked to vote for their favourite model from both categories and this went to Stephen Crowe's Sauron.

I do have some photos of the other entries so keep an eye out for a post with them in very soon, or if you can't wait they over on the GBHL FB page.

Happy Strategy Battle Gaming guys!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENT

*IMPORTANT NOTICE - PLEASE READ*

There is no club on the 8th March as the pub booked the function room out to a christening as they hadn't transferred the books from the old diary to the new one. There is a christening booked on that day which has already been paid for so there isn't much I can do. Club will resume on the 22nd March. The same issue has also occurred on the 19th April.

So to confirm:
There will be no club as previously advertised on:
8th March 2015
19th April 2015

If you know anyone who attends but doesn't have access to this page or the blog, please let them know.

I have booked up until June so this won't happen again.

Apologies once again.

Forming a Last Alliance Army

I have been working on a last alliance army for War of the Ring now for a while and decided to let people see how it's coming along.
The army will be a combined force of elves, men and eventually dwarfs (which aren't listed below as I haven't decided what they will comprise off yet).
The list:

Elves-
  • Gil-galad
  • Elrond
  • Glorfindel
  • Celeborn
  • Círdan
  • Thranduil
  • High elf regiment. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • High elf regiment. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • Rivendell guard. 3 strong
  • High elf Archer regiment. 3strong with captain and banner
  • High elf Archer regiment. 3strong with captain and banner
  • High elf Archer regiment. 3strong with captain and banner
  • Galadhrim regiment. 3 strong with shields, captain and banner

Númenór-
  • Elendil
  • Isildur
  • Númenórean warriors. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • Númenórean warriors. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • Númenórean warriors. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • Númenórean warriors. 3 strong with captain and banner
  • Númenórean archers. 3 strong with captain and banner

The elves come in at 2990pts and the Númenóreans at 1095pts.
 A total of 4085pts.

As their are more elf units I have decided to start with one of them.
I chose to do a sword regiment first as i get more enjoyment of modelling than the painting part and i wanted to do a unit with it's front rank in the film pose.

Sticking with the the elves, the next unit I decided on was archers so that I could field an sbg army.

You may notice the gap next to the banner man this is for the captain. It will be a Elrond model with an armoured Glorfindel  head. I haven't painted the banner as I plan on putting a paper one over the top.

After two regiments i decided to do a character. For me the was only a choice of one to start with and that was Glorfindel (he's my favourite Tolkien character)

In the next instalment I will start on the Númenórians.

Important Announcement

Hi All,

I am pleased to announce that Thomas Seccombe has agreed to become Vice Chairman.

Ever since I began running this club Tom has been a pillar of support and has helped me with day to day running of the club. He has also helped to organise several of our Hobbit SBG events and is a regular host on our popular youtube channel.

Tom will be responsible for club purchases. If you have suggestions for club scenery etc, feel free to contact him at midsussexwargamers@gmail.com.

I hope you will all show Tom the support you have shown me in the last few months and make this club even bigger and better.

I would also like to invite you all to our club AGM which will be held on 22nd Feb. This is a club date but it shouldn't take too long. I'd encourage all of you to attend and share your thoughts/ opinions/ ideas with myself and Tom on how we can improve the club in the future.

Kind Regards

Sam Page

New Year Announcement and Hobbit SBG Video Bat Reps

A belated Happy New Year to everyone!

A few bits of information for you all regarding this upcoming year at MSWG.

  • The Club is currently CLOSED as the Dorset Arms is closed for refurbishment. Providing the building work stays on schedule, I hope to have the club open on 8th Feb 2015.

  • Thank you to everyone who took advantage of the Early Bird membership offer, I have ordered the new dice and there is a possibility I will have those for the first meet on 8th Feb 2015.

  • For those who missed out, a year membership is now £40, see the post below this one for details.

  • I have also ordered some new scenery for both SBG/ Fantasy and 40k. If anyone has any ideas, wants, email them to midsussexwargamers@gmail.com and I'll take a look.

  • Our first Hobbit SBG event, Battle for East Rivenstead, sold out in under 2 hours! Massive thanks to everyone for making our events consistently sell out. I have ordered the first round of prizes for that, keep an eye out for an unboxing video when they arrive.

So there is all the boring bits of information out the way. Myself, Tom and Chris have been busy filming lots of videos for our youtube channel. Our latest videos are Hobbit SBG bat reps where myself and Chris pit our 350pt armies against each other in Domination and a custom scenario, Capture the Flag.

Don't forget to subscribe for instant emails when we upload more videos.

Happy Wargaming!

Sam & the MSWG team.
